dc.description.abstract-translatedThis article explores the history of “postcolonial” oppression, through which the inhabitants of Sierra Mazateca (Oaxaca, Mexico) were incorporated into a new cycle of global economic relations, deprived of the partial autonomy they had previously exercised. The underlying hypothesis is that these emerging social dynamics during the second half of the nineteenth century transformed the communities not only into dispossessed but also into dependents at the moment when the land began to represent, besides a source of wealth, a new source of capital development through the cultivation of coffee, giving exploitation a new form. The paper draws on political and economic theory focusing on the relationship between colonial and racial oppression and the history of global capitalism, as well as archival sources and testimonies of the inhabitants obtained during the fieldwork.cze
